ChatGPT, anyone? You've probably heard of AI tools taking over the creative industry by now. From photographers to hair and makeup artists, models, and everyone in between, AI (artificial intelligence) is open to all and has something for everyone.
As a creative freelancer in Fashion, AI can help you automate tedious tasks, step up your networking game and take your creativity to new heights. It can be a lifesaver if you don't like writing, or if you're stuck in a creative rut and need a quick boost. But to get the most out of AI tools, you need quality prompts. You'll find prompts you can use and adapt depending on your needs in this post.
đź’ˇ Prompts are instructions you give to AI so it can give you what you're looking for. The more detailed your prompt is, the better the results.
But all good things in technology come with downsides. We'll also discuss the risks associated with using AI, as it can become easy to get obsessed with it and kill our creativity in the process. Read on to see why.
The ultimate arsenal: 14 ways to use AI for fashion freelancers
1) Write a snazzy pitch
You need a good pitch to convince clients and agencies to work with you in the fashion industry. If writing isn't your thing, tools like ChatGPT, CopyAI and rytr can help you whip up a convincing pitch in seconds. You can then use a tool like Grammarly to enhance your pitch and make it sound more natural - more like you.
For example, you could ask AI something like:
"I'm a model with 5 years of experience in the industry. I've done editorials, commercials, campaigns and billboards. I've worked with Nike, Adidas and Lazy Oaf. I also surf and play classical piano - I'm a big fan of classical music masters like Mozart and Chopin.
I'm about to contact a brand called XYZ that I'd love to work with. They may be looking for models like me. Can you write a short, convincing pitch that I can send them via email? Use contractions and neutral language."
This is what ChatGPT wrote, with minor editing on our part:
Hey [Name],
As a fan of XYZ and its values, I wanted to reach out and express my interest in potentially working together on future campaigns or projects. With five years of modelling experience under my belt, I've had the privilege of working with several well-known brands such as Nike, Adidas, and Lazy Oaf. My expertise includes editorials, commercials, campaigns, and billboards, which have helped me develop a versatile skill set that would be a valuable asset to your brand.
Aside from modelling, I also have a passion for surfing and classical piano. I'm particularly inspired by the works of classical music masters like Mozart and Chopin. My experience in these areas has taught me discipline, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, values that I believe align well with your brand's ethos.
If you're looking for a dedicated and reliable model with a unique set of skills and a strong work ethic, I'd love to discuss potential collaborations. I've attached my portfolio for your review, and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
All the best,
[Your Name]
Pretty good, right? But it still needs some key elements -

on how to craft the perfect pitch to get replies.
2) Generate social media captions for brand collabs
AI can be a lifesaver when you need ideas for brand collaborations but can't find the time or inspiration.
Here are some prompts you can use to get the ball rolling:
"Generate a list of hashtags with less than 1 million views I can use for my Instagram post about [
topic
] for [brand
].""I created an Instagram post to promote [
product
] for a brand that sells [products
]. The video shows me using the product and showing the before and after results. Write a compelling caption for this video, using the hashtags you generated above."3) Upgrade your bio
Clients on Contact pay attention to creatives' bios. Does your Contact bio need a refresher? Copy and paste your current bio into an AI writing tool and ask it to improve it. For example, you could use prompts like "make this bio shorter" or "make this bio more playful/engaging/inspiring."
4) Get viral Tik Tok content ideas
This might not work, but you never know. AI tools can help you find viral content ideas for different social media platforms. Use prompts like:
"My audience on Tik Tok is [
describe your audience
]. I want to create a viral TikTok video about [topic
]. Develop a funny, relatable script that will capture the attention of my followers and encourage sharing and comments.""I want to create a viral TikTok video about [
topic
] for [describe your target audience
]. Can you help me develop 10 unique ideas for this video?"5) Experiment with new hair & makeup looks
Got an idea in mind but can't put it down on paper? Sometimes, AI can give you that little push to lift a creative block. Use text-to-image generators like Midjourney, Dall.e and Wonder.ai to illustrate your creative vision.
For better suggestions, use detailed prompts. The more detailed your prompt is, the better the results.
For example, this is what Wonder.ai generated with the following prompt: "
black man with orange eyeshadow, glossy red lips and glitter on cheeks.
"

6) Get career advice
AI is a research powerhouse, scouring through millions of articles on Google to find answers to your questions in seconds. If you need help with your career, you could turn to AI for free advice. But always take it with a pinch of salt: AI relies on information available online, which can sometimes be outdated, inaccurate, or misleading. So sometimes, the AI's answers may be deceptive. It's best to consolidate the AI's replies with your own research, and speak with (humans) to get real, honest advice.
7) Create mesmerising photography
You can upload your images and transform them into fascinating works of art with AI tools like Midjourney and Runway. Read this feature of photographer Salomé on It's Nice That to see how she used AI to create her latest photo series.

8) Better organise your life
AI-powered tools like Notion can help you organise your career into neat calendars, project timelines, idea boards, task lists, and more. The tool will spot usage patterns so you can duplicate and adapt projects in seconds. You can also create smart calendars to share with other creatives for easier collaboration. The calendar automatically prioritises tasks so you can always know what’s the most important thing to do next. Head here for free templates to get started.
9) Analyse social media metrics
AI-powered sentiment analysis tools give insights into your social media content's engagement and effectiveness. These tools can analyse comments, likes, and shares to gauge audience sentiment and identify trends - you don't have to lift a finger. Examples of free sentiment analysis tools include Social Mention and Brand24.
10) Write engaging Youtube video descriptions
If you create content on Youtube, AI can help you generate powerful Youtube descriptions. Good Youtube descriptions are essential as they can boost your stats, spike viewer's interest, get you new subscribers, and encourage sharing. Here are some prompts you can use:
"Generate a video description for a video that is about [
topic
] that includes words to increase engagement and shares.""I made a video about [
topic/describe the video content
]. My audience is primarily [describe your audience
]. Write a highly engaging video description to encourage more views. Use an informal tone and simple words."11) Generate a brief or proposal about (anything)
If you need to make a:
- photoshoot brief
- creative brief
- brand collab proposal
- casting brief
- any type of project brief
You can ask AI to create a detailed brief for you. Here's an example of a prompt you can use:
“I'm a [
your profession
]. I have to present a [type of
] brief for [project/client
]. Their target audience is [describe audience
]. Can you generate this brief, including:- project deliverables
- target audience
- goals
- creative direction”
12) Enhance image quality with AI-powered upscaling
Sometimes, photographers need to enlarge an image beyond its original size without compromising its quality. AI-powered upscaling tools use machine learning algorithms to analyse an image and fill in the missing details to produce a high-quality, enlarged version of the original image. This can be especially useful for fashion photographers who need to showcase their images in large formats, such as billboards.

13) Quickly answer emails
Got an email from a client or your boss, but can't find the words to draft a reply? Paste the email into an AI writing tool and ask it to craft a response. Specify the tone (formal/informal/neutral) and describe the recipient in a few words to ensure the answer hits the mark.

14) Unlock advanced photo editing features
AI-assisted editing tools can save you heaps of time when editing your images. In one click, tools like Luminar V can mask objects from your photos, replace skies, enhance portraits and intelligently balance up to a dozen fundamental controls, including shadows, highlights, contrast, tone, saturation, exposure, and details.
How not to use AI in your work
AI is fascinating. But it has its downsides.
AI is often inaccurate
Rather than simply copying and pasting answers or blindly following the advice of an AI tool, take a moment to assess whether the information provided makes sense. Although an answer may initially appear to be convincing, read it twice and you may find it's devoid of meaning or even incorrect.
For example, try asking ChatGPT what's the largest country in Central America. It'll tell you Honduras. Yet, the correct answer is...Nicaragua. That's probably because there are many articles online wrongfully claiming that Honduras is the largest country in Central America. But a quick look at the numbers will tell you the truth (Indexmundi, 2020):
- Nicaragua: 130,370 km2
- Honduras: 112,090 km2
When you use AI-generated information in your work, make sure you've checked it yourself and backed up facts with additional research. Don't just rely on what artificial intelligence tells you. Think for yourself and decide if the information is good enough to put your name on it.
AI, on its own, can produce average work and ideas
It can get very tempting to use AI to find ideas instead of doing the brainstorming ourselves. Yet, creativity is a fundamental aspect of our work. And by letting a tool do the creative process in our place, we deliberately set our creativity and imagination aside. Over time, what do you think this would do to your brain? When we stop working on something, we stop improving.
At Contact, we sometimes use AI to generate copy for blog posts. But we find that the information provided is often a mere reproduction of what's already available online, no matter how detailed the prompts are.
We believe in the power of well-written pieces. And they often have that one crucial element that AI-written content can't produce on its own: original thought.
For a piece of content to truly succeed and engage, it must strike an emotional response in the viewer. It must dig deeper and offer something the viewer didn't expect to learn. It must show empathy, and connect with the viewer's values. And an AI tool is, at least for now, incapable of producing such pieces without human intervention.
Take this statement from author Kevin Kelly in a recent interview with Noah Smith:
"Since the generative AIs have been trained on the entirety of human work — most of it mediocre — it produces "wisdom of the crowd"-like results. They may hit the mark but only because they are average."
So the question you must ask yourself is, do you want to produce mediocre work?
Use AI to enhance your creativity and skills, not to replace them. Think of AI as your free personal assistant, taking care of the tasks you don't want to spend time on, without getting in the way of your personal development.

By incorporating AI-powered tools into your workflow, you’ll boost productivity, save time on tedious tasks, and improve the quality of your work. But don't let your creativity slip away in the process - it's what makes you shine.
