Booking creatives online: why ethics matter
With advanced filters, low fees for brands, and access to international creatives, technology has made hiring creative talent online fast and easy – whatever your needs.
But this can sometimes dehumanise the process. We look at a creative’s profile, choose one that fits our budget, click ‘book,’ get the job done, pay, and that’s it. It’s a short-term relationship that tends to overlook a creative’s identity and personality or needs.
If the creative can’t grow their freelance career with each new booking and feel valued, this can hurt their motivation and mental health in the long term. Especially if the pay is low. In fact, nearly 25% of all creators admit they have real doubts they’ll ever be able to reach their financial goals without burning out.
The state of the industry
A report by Deloitte says “the creative economy is a key driver of economic growth.” Talented freelance creatives are the backbone of the creative industries that are now the fastest-growing part of the economy in the UK.
But for years, creatives have been underpaid and overworked. Despite their importance to the sector, the self-employed in the creative industries, especially the fashion industry, feel undervalued by brands that hire them and invisible to policymakers.
Fortunately, the industry’s changing. Brands are now willing to make creatives feel more valued and get more praise for their talent. The UK is finally moving towards policies that support freelance work. But what does being valued look like for a creative?
It starts with the basics: fair pay for their work, no late payments, and ethical working conditions.
Did you know that some agencies take up to 35% in commission fees from creatives? And that doesn’t include booking fees for brands. Some platforms like Upwork have also started taking fees from creatives, making it even harder for freelancers to make an income.
